Al Smith Social media in local government

About me

I'm currently working at Newcastle City Council as a communication adviser focused on Web 2.0 in council communication.  I took up the post in November 2008 and worked on a number of projects including the council's successful Twitter channel. Since then my work on Twitter has been shortlisted for an award ('Best Innovative Use of Internet Communication' - North East Digital Awards 08).

I've also spoken to numerous organisations about social media including Tyne and Wear Museums, NewcastleGateshead Initiative, Newcastle Science City and the Moldova Regional Development (MDRD) project. In addition to this I've spoken at conferences including PSFBuzz in Newcastle.

Before joining the council I worked in a number of roles in publications, PR and marketing in public sector and arts organisations.

Web 2.0 strategies for local govt (specifically Newcastle City Council), football fan, music lover and cynic.

The views expressed here are my own and are not necessarily those of the Council itself.
